A Grating-based Spectral Filtering Project in Photonics Instrumentation
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2006-02-01) Chang, Gao-Wei; Yeh, Zong-Mu; Lin, Yu-Hsuan; Chang, Hsiu-Ming
In response to the growing demand of photonic systems engineers in industries, this paper proposes a term project that help students gain insight into photonics instrumentation via a grating-based spectrometer. The students are guided through simulations and experiments for the spectral filtering system and then implement the spectrometer using some technical notes and testing kits. They perform experiments and tests to verify and refine their works. A contest is held at the end of the course where the measurement accuracy and repeatability of the proposed systems are evaluated. This project has been used for two semesters, and both the instructors' and the students' feedback are discussed.

A Progressive Design Approach to Enhance Project-based Learning in Applied Electronics through an Optoelectronic Sensing Project
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2008-05-01) Chang, Gao-Wei; Yeh, Zong-Mu; Pan, Shih-Yao; Liao, Chia-Cheng; Chang, Hsiu-Ming
In this paper, a progressive design learning approach is proposed in the course of ldquoapplied electronicsrdquo to help students to develop system design skills through an optoelectronic sensing project. This project offers a progressive guideline to lead student teams to design, build, and troubleshoot their optoelectronic systems. Such a system contains a light-source current stabilizer, a photodiode amplifier, a microcontroller system (including input and output), and optomechanical devices. In this approach, students are motivated to learn the required knowledge and skills in a future professional capacity. Those skills include designing specification, realizing teamwork and communication, and developing a variety of optoelectronic sensing techniques. Through this project, an optoelectronic sensing system is established called a spatial radiance distribution measurement system for various light sources. In particular, this kind of system is useful and important for LED industries. The course evaluations have been obtained from classmates and instructors and these results indicate that the objectives of this course are achieved.

Teaching Photonics Laboratory Using Remote Control Web Technologies
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2005-11-01) Chang, Wan-Jen; Yeh, Zong-Mu; Chang, Hsiu-Ming; Pan, Shih-Yao
This paper proposes a remote education system, Virtual Photonics Experiments Network (V-PEN), for teaching photonics experiments. In this approach, teaching and learning photonics become easier by the V-PEN. A design procedure for transforming real experiments to online experiments is also proposed, and a Michelson interference system as an example is employed to describe the procedures of the online experiments. This photonics experiment platform has been used for a semester. The survey of learners' feedback is also presented.
