    High vocational education in Taiwan
    (Westerville, OH : The Association, 2003-01-01) Kuang-chao Yu & How-gao Hsu
Since the 1950s, technological and vocational education (TVE) and its close links with industrial needs have led to the establishment of first, vocational high schools; then, junior colleges; and finally, universities and postgraduate programs that cultivate a comprehensive range of technologically skilled personnel. Technological and vocational education has been closely connected with economic development in Taiwan. However, at the beginning of the 21st century, with Taiwan's industries and business facing more rigorous global economic competition and needing a more technologically oriented workforce, TVE in Taiwan is currently facing a critical period of transition, especially in postsecondary education level. The purpose of this article is to examine postsecondary technological and vocational education (TVE) development in Taiwan and to discuss challenges faced in the past and present to build a high quality educational system. First, the context of TVET is presented. Then, TVE's evolution and organisational structure are discussed. Next, curriculum design and delivery processes are detailed. Finally, discussion is offered to express our reflections on the development of postsecondary TVE in Taiwan.
