Item Filial norms and intergenerational support to aging parents in China and Taiwan(2011-07-01) Lin, Ju-Ping; Chin-Chun YiThis study compared intergenerational relations in China and Taiwan. It has been assumed that cultural homogeneity results in filial norms being the shared dominant family value. However, due to different socio-economic experiences, other situational factors could produce different effects in China and Taiwan. Specifically, geographical distance, parental demands, and children's resources were incorporated in the analysis. We suspected that different situational factors might interact with filial norms in producing varying effects on intergenerational support. Data were taken from the 2006 East Asian Social Survey. Results confirmed that the patriarchal family model of intergenerational support remains strong in both China and Taiwan. The traditional Chinese filial norms significantly accounted for all aspects of intergenerational support examined.Item Intergenerational relations and life satisfaction among older women in Taiwan(2011-06-01) Lin, Ju-Ping; Tse-Fan Chang; Chiu-Hua HuangThis study examined the relationship between intergenerational relations and life satisfaction among older women (aged 55 years and older) in Taiwan. According to intergenerational solidarity theory, intergenerational relations are dictated by various components: living arrangements, intergenerational support exchange, intergenerational affection, and intergenerational norms. Data were obtained from the 2006 Taiwan Social Change Survey (N= 281). The main results show that intergenerational relations have a significant effect on the life satisfaction of older women. Western studies have found that playing the giver's role increases the life satisfaction of older people. However, the present study found that being mainly a recipient of support from adult children is related to a higher level of life satisfaction among older Taiwanese women. This study also underscores the importance of the emotional component in intergenerational relations to the well-being of older people. In Taiwan, stronger emotional bonds with adult children increases older women's life satisfaction.Item In vitro antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects of herbs against Propionibacterium acnes.(ELSEVIER, 2010-04-01) Tsung-Hsien Tsai, Tzung-Hsun Tsai, Wen-Huey Wu, Jonathon Te-Peng Tseng and Po-Jung Tsai.,Propionibacterium acnes play an important role in the pathogenesis of acne by inducing certain inflammatory mediators and comedogenesis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects of herbal extracts against P. acnes. Among the ten tested herbs, methanolic extracts of rose (Rosa damascene), duzhong (Eucommia ulmoides Oliv.), and yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) were found to inhibit the growth of P. acnes with respective minimum inhibitory concentrations of 2, 0.5, and 1 mg/ml. In addition, duzhong and yerba mate extracts reduced the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumour necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-8, and IL-1β by human monocytic THP-1 cells pretreated with heat-killed P. acnes at a concentration of 0.1 mg/ml. Our results suggested that duzhong and yerba mate extracts possess both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects against P. acnes and can possibly be used as therapeutic agents for acne.Item Curcumin-induced mitotic spindle defect and cell cycle arrest in human bladder cancer cells is partly through inhibition of Aurora-A(The American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, 2011-10-01) Liu, H.-S., Ke, C.-S., Cheng, H.-C., Huang, C.-Y. F., and Su, C.-L.,Curcumin, an active compound in turmeric and curry, has been proven to induce tumor apoptosis and inhibit tumor proliferation, invasion, angiogenesis, and metastasis via modulating numerous targets in various types of cancer cells. Aurora A is a mitosis-related serine-threonine kinase and plays important roles in diverse human cancers. However, the effect of curcumin on Aurora A has not been reported. In this study, Aurora A promoter activity and mRNA expression were inhibited in curcumin-treated human bladder cancer T24 cells, suggesting that Aurora A is regulated at the transcription level. We also found that curcumin preferentially inhibited the growth of T24 cells, which show a higher proliferation rate, invasion activity, and expression level of Aurora A compared with that of human immortalized uroepithelial E7cells. Furthermore, inhibition of phosphorylation of Aurora A and its downstream target histone H3 accompanied by the formation of monopolar spindle, induction of G2 /M phase arrest, and reduction in cell division in response to curcumin were detected in T24 cells. These curcumin-induced phenomena were similar to those using Aurora A small interfering RNA and were attenuated by ectopic expression of Aurora A. Therefore, the antitumor mechanism of curcumin is Aurora A-related, which further supports the application of curcumin in treatments of human cancers.Item Kinase gene expression and subcellular protein expression pattern of protein kinase C isoforms in curcumin-treated human hepatocellular carcinoma Hep 3B cells(Springer US, 2011-05-01) Kao, H.-H., Wu, C.-J., Won, S.-J., Shin, J.-W., Liu, H.-S, and Su, C.-L.,Curcumin, a yellow component of turmeric or curry powder, has been demonstrated to exhibit anti-carcinogenic effects in vitro, in vivo, and in human clinical trials. One of its molecular targets is protein kinase C (PKC) which has been reported to play essential roles in apoptosis, cell proliferation, and carcinogenesis. In this study, PKC mRNA expression was significantly inhibited in curcumin-treated human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) Hep 3B cells identified using a kinase cDNA microarray. Furthermore, curcumin decreased total protein expression of all PKCs in a time-related manner by immunoblotting of whole cell lysates, nuclear, membrane, and cytosolic fractions. In cytosolic fraction, the expression of PKC-α was totally inhibited by curcumin. In contrast, the expression levels of PKC-ζ and -μ were dramatically increased. Increases in expression of PKC-δ and PKC-ζ in the membrane and nucleus, and PKC-ι in the membrane were detected. In summary, the changes in expression and distribution of subcellular PKC isoforms in curcumin-treated Hep 3B cells suggest possible PKC-associated anti-tumor mechanisms of curcumin and provide alternative therapies for human HCC.Item Involvement of apoptosis and autophagy in reducing mouse hepatoma ML-1 cells growth in inbred BALB/c mice by bacterial fermented soybeans products(Elsevier, 2011-01-01) Su, C.-L., Chen, F.-N., and Won, S.-J.,Followed by the results of our previousn vitroeport (Food Chem. Toxicol., 2007), the efficacy of the soybean fermentation products containing live bacteria (SCB) was demonstrated using a syngeneic animal model. Murine HBV-related hepatoma ML-1 cells, derived from inbred animals and tumorigenic in BALB/c mice, were implanted subcutaneously to the flank of BALB/c mice on day 0. Three days after implantation, SCB (1.0 or 1.3l/mouse/day) or vehicle (water) was orally administrated daily until day 60. The results indicate that SCB significantly reduced (P<0.05) the volumes and weights of tumors during the experimental periods. Examination using TUNEL staining on section of tumors revealed apoptotic phenomenon of nuclear DNA double-strand breaks in the groups of mice received SCB. Immunohistochemistry further revealed an autophagic LC3-II punctate pattern. Of note, SCB induced autophagy in the absence or presence of apoptosis, whereas, apoptosis was observed only in combination with autophagy.n vitrotudy using autophagy inhibitor indicated that the induction of autophagy promoted apoptosis. These data imply that the suppression in tumor volumes and tumor weights by oral administration of SCB was due to the induction of apoptotic and autophagic cell death, which suggests therapeutic potential of SCB on HBV-related HCC.Item
