Item Image-based height measuring systems for liquid or particles in tanks(2004-03-23) M.-C. Lu; W.-Y. Wang; H.-H. LanIn this paper, an image-based height measuring system for liquid or particulate material, which does not use pixels to measure distance, is proposed to measure the material height inside of a storage tank. Two laser projectors, fixed on a base, define a vertical plane to produce two projected bright spots on the surface of the material in the tank. A timer, instead of pixel counter, for measuring distance and a circuit for counting the number of clock pulses between the two bright spots are employed to calculate the distance between the two projected bright spots in the video images. Since the two laser projectors form an isosceles triangle, there is a simple relationship between the actual measured height and the distance of the two bright spots. The actual height of liquid in the tank can be calculated from a simple formula. One does not have to use a expensive high speed DSP microprocessor to identify the bright spots, but just use a simple voltage comparator to identify them. Experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed system.Item Optical-based distance measuring systems (ODMS)(2005-06-01) M.-C. Lu; W.-Y. Wang; C.-Y. WangIn this paper, we propose a new method to measure area using only a single CCD camera in different distances. Two parallel laser beams are established to serve as the basis for horizontal length measurement. A single horizontal scanning line of the CCD image is only required for the area measurement. Based on the pixel numbers between two projected points within a CCD image, which represent the resolution of horizontal length, the actual area can be derived by counting the pixel numbers occupied by the image of the object to be measured on the CCD image. Our research results are merited with quick measurement speed, simple system structures and there will be no necessity to adopt image recognizing or signal analysis techniques to calculate the area from different photographing distances.Item A method of distance measurement by digital camera(2006-11-11) T.-H. TsaiA novel measuring system based on a single non-metric CCD camera and a laser projector is proposed in this paper for measuring distance of a remote object. The setup of the measuring system is relatively easy, in which the laser pointer is positioned beside the CCD camera so that laser beam projected is parallel to the optical axis of the camera in a fixed distance. Based on a fast and effective algorithm proposed in this paper, the central position of the projected laser spot in images due to the laser beam can be accurately identified for calculating the distance of a targeted object according to an established formula. Because of the relationship of pixels counts of the diameter of the laser spot at different distances, processing of a sub-frame comprising a fraction of scan lines, rather than the whole image, is only required. Significant savings of computation time can therefore be achieved. Simulation results show satisfactory measurements can be obtained, where averaged absolute measurement errors via the proposed approach lie within 0.502%.Item Image-Based Height Measuring System(2007-08-26) W.-Y. Wang; M.-C. Lu; C.-T. Chuang; J.-C. ChengIn this paper, a new distance measuring method to measure the height of a building is proposed. Traditionally, distance measuring using CCD is based on the parallax method. This paper puts forward a method of measuring the width and height of a building regardless of the distance of the camera or the angle between optical axis and ground. By using two parallel laser spots, the distance from the camera to the building and the height of the building can be determined in a single photo session and with a single picture. Experiments show that even highly non-orthogonal pictures taken from a short distance can be used to determine the height of a building. The result will not be affected by the angle between the camera’s optical axis, the ground and the measured surface.Item Nighttime Vehicle Distance Alarm System(2007-08-26) M.-C. Lu; W.-Y. Wang; C.-C. Chen; C.-P. TsaiKeeping safe distance between two cars is an important topic for car accident prevention. This paper presents a practical nighttime vehicle distance measuring method based on a single CCD image. The method combines the image-based distance measuring system (IBDMS) with nighttime vehicle distance alarm system. To solve the nighttime feature extraction problem, the proposed method uses two taillights as the feature. Based on the proportionality of similar triangles, distance between a CCD camera and taillight of the vehicle ahead can be measured. The method focuses on detecting taillight and differentiating the targeted vehicle from others on the basis of partial image analysis instead of whole image processing. As a result, high-speed processing and simple configuration of the proposed method have been achieved as demonstrated in this paper.Item A Practical Nighttime Vehicle Distance Alarm System(2008-10-15) M.-C. Tsai; M.-C. Lu; W.-Y. Wang; Y.-H. ChienA novel image-based area measurement system is proposed in this paper, we can convert the pixels of object into real area by image processes. No matter the system is vertical to the measuring plane or not and the height of system, it could calculates arbitrary two points on the image convert into the actual distance. This paper proposed a new structure for achieve our goal, there are four laser projects and camera fixed on same base, then generate four laser spots on the object or measurement plant, and assume connect each two laser spots as parallel lines, finally it could simulated a ruler in the image. Without consider photography angle for this system, it can measure area of floor or height of building.Item Image-Based Landslide Monitoring System(2011-06-10) M.-C. Lu; T.-Y. Tang; C.-P. Tsai; W.-Y. Wang; I-H. Lia novel image-based landslide monitoring system proposed in this paper, which is using digital image processes methods to detect landslide occurred in any landslide occurred situation to achieve a non-contact landslide monitoring system by one image. The theory of this system is based on using a laser projector to project a laser beam to measurement box, which have two acrylic boards in the measurement box. When landslide occurred, the laser beam will generate two laser spots in image. To identify the coordinate of laser spots through an easy calculation, the system could get the landslide displacement and offset angle. According the measurement result, it could announce the warning and prevent the damage.
