Abstract
Sport for Development (SFD) had recently gained global policy attention due to its physical, social, and public benefits. This study adopted SFD as a theoretical framework and integrated it with the “three-stage and five-level prevention model” from public health to examine the multifaceted roles of sport in health promotion, disease prevention, and social development. The research analyzed 89 news articles from sportanddev.org and 34 academic journal papers. Journal articles were thematically categorized using template analysis, while the news articles were processed with CATAR text-mining tools to extract thematic structures and language patterns. The results showed that sport, as a means of advocacy, enhanced public awareness and action on health issues. As a communication platform, it also facilitated intercultural understanding and the promotion of health behaviors. Sport also built up partnerships among governments, NGOs, and communities to diversify public health efforts. At the same time, it encouraged individual reflection on health behaviors and social responsibility. Within the three-stage, five-level prevention framework, sport demonstrated significant value by improving individual health and promoting societal well-being and health equity. The study suggested deeper integrating between sport and public health, development systematic intervention strategies, and the expanse sport-based health promotion networks. It suggested that future research explore the differential effects of various sport types across public health levels to extend the application of SFD as a tool for sustainable health and social development.
