Abstract
This study investigates the use of translanguaging strategies and translation assistance in online English teaching in Taiwan, examining their effectiveness in enhancing student comprehension, alleviating learning anxiety, and fostering motivation. Despite the increasing adoption of immersive English-only instruction in education, many students still struggle with comprehension in such environments, leading to less-than-ideal learning outcomes. Focusing on the integration of students’ native language through translanguaging strategies, this research explores how translation assistance can be leveraged by teachers to improve instructional effectiveness. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight online English teachers to assess their strategic approaches and student responses in the classroom. The findings reveal that the judicious use of students’ native language and translation can improve comprehension, reduce anxiety, and increase learning motivation. This study offers practical teaching strategies for online English instructors, addressing the limitations of English-only teaching, and proposes tailored translation activities to better address the unique challenges of online learning environments.
