Abstract

Being deemed as a tendency, even the third revolution of the cinema, digital cinema is one of the most important and prevalent issues currently in the film industry worldwide. Nonetheless, the key point to foster digital cinema is closely relating to the popularization of digital cinema screens. In Taiwan, although the administration is working hard to promote digital cinema theaters all the time, until now, only fifteen theaters have been transformed into digital ones since the first was established in 2003. This study introduced the experiences and status quo of the countries which are important in the field of digital cinema, and collected the problems they’ve faced while developing digital cinema. The framework of this study was combining the model of five competitive forces with STEEP-analysis and scenario-analysis. In respect of research method, this study has taken three methods including in-depth interview, telephone questionnaire, and secondary analysis to collect the necessary data. According to all the primary and secondary data collected, this study has described, explored, and analyzed the status quo and problems while developing digital cinema theaters in Taiwan. The results of this study showed whether digital cinemas in Taiwan will develope well depends on three elements: the subsidy from government, the occurance of a third party, and the effects on box office from different content provided by digital cinemas including “digital 3D movie” which is highly-expected by film industry worldwide. The most possible development of digital cinemas in Taiwan is estimated as following: firstly, a certain third party will be willing to enter the market; secondly, the subsidy from government will decrease; thirdly, the different content provided by digital cinemas won’t boost the box office too much. This study concluded that digital cinemas in Taiwan will increase stably in amount, but they are not considered as a remedy to resurrect Taiwan’s film exhibition industry.
