Abstract
A cappella music has evolved into various styles and forms since its origins in the 15th century. The author has been involved in the a cappella music industry for over a decade. Although merely a small part of the field, they have had the privilege of participating in and witnessing the development and operations of contemporary a cappella music in Taiwan. Motivated by curiosity about music, a deep passion for a cappella, and a desire for innovation, the author seeks to explore the essence of a cappella music and reflect on its uniqueness and limitations. This written report employs in-depth interviews with a number of a cappella producers, creators, and arrangers from both domestic and international contexts, all of whom possess extensive practical experience and professional expertise. The study collects, organizes, and analyzes their perspectives on the creation and production of a cappella music. The findings indicate that a cappella, as a performance form that relies exclusively on the human voice as its sole sound source, possesses both unique qualities and inherent limitations rooted in the nature of the human voice itself. Maximizing the expressive potential of the voice while effectively overcoming its physiological constraints—such as those related to vocal range, frequency bandwidth, and volume—constitutes one of the core challenges in the development of a cappella music. Insights derived from these interviews are further applied to the author’s own album project, serving as a practice-based process of creative validation and reflection, with the aim of establishing a meaningful dialogue and connection between theory and practice.
