Abstract

Cesar Franck (1822-1890) was one of the leading figures of 19th-century French Romantic music, born in Belgium but developed his musical career mainly in France. This article begins with the life of Franck, and selects one work for research in the early and later periods, namely “Ballade, Op. 9” and “Prélude, Choral et Fugue”. Franck's musical bridge not only represents his famous cyclic form but also symbolizes his unique musical language that integrates various musical styles, serving as a bridge between the past and the future. The first chapter introduces the motivation and method of research, the second chapter consists of two sections, the first section will discuss Franck's musical career, the second section separately discusses the period of piano works and Franck's early and late piano music language, characteristics and techniques he created. Chapters 3 and 4 are the analysis of the music of the two works, which echoes with the style characteristics of the second chapter, and the fifth chapter is the interpretation of performance, which is divided into"speed, tonality and character", "fingering and touch", "harmony, texture and color", and "the use of pedals" from the perspective of personal playing. Chapter 6 is the conclusion of the four sections, which serves as a summary of the research in this paper.
