Abstract
Computer assistive products are developed to help people with physical disabilities in operating a computer. However, most of them are designed for a single function; more than one assistive product must be used at the same time for multiple input functions. This research focuses on the developing of an integrated input device. We use an 8051 microprocessor along with a liquid crystal display and a touch panel to display keyboard layout and let disabled users input data. Besides the touch input function, this system also provides scanning input and Morse code input for people with different needs. We also integrate the functions of a mouse in this device. Thus, handicapped users can carry out the works done by a keyboard and a mouse with this device. To increase its practical value, this system also includes the function of a personal digital assistant. Through the use of touch input, physically disabled users can keep notes without a pen or paper. We hope this integrated system can help make information technology more accessible to the disabled.
