Abstract
With the rapid pace of globalization and the Vietnamese government’s reforms initiated in 1986, studying abroad has become increasingly common for Vietnamese students. Among their top choices, Taiwan has emerged as a preferred destination due to its high-quality education, which was cultivated over 18 years by the Ministry of Education’s representative office in Vietnam, along with its appealing living environment and cultural richness. The post-pandemic resumption of flights between Taiwan and Vietnam has further spurred a significant increase in Vietnamese students pursuing studies in Taiwan. For these students, traveling across Taiwan's scenic landscapes is more than a leisure activity—it offers an opportunity for cultural exploration, personal growth, and building meaningful connections while taking a break from academic rigors. However, beginner-level learners of Chinese often encounter unpredictable situations during their travels. To prevent language barriers from becoming a source of stress, the development of practical travel Chinese teaching materials has become a pressing need. Currently, research and teaching materials specifically designed for beginner-level Vietnamese learners in the context of Taiwan-focused travel Chinese are extremely limited. To address this gap, this study examines existing research and resources related to Tourism in Taiwan Chinese teaching materials through a comprehensive literature review and analysis. A questionnaire survey targeting Vietnamese students already in Taiwan or planning to study there was conducted to understand their specific needs for travel Chinese teaching materials. Based on the results, the researcher designed sample teaching materials comprising two lessons, integrating situational dialogues and cultural insights. Feedback was sought from both experts and learners to evaluate the practicality and relevance of the proposed materials. Finally, the study presents recommendations for designing Tourism Chinese teaching materials tailored to the needs of beginner-level Vietnamese learners, aiming to contribute to future material development and related research.
