Abstract
This research examines the feasibility of transition design as a research methodology for social innovation, specifically focusing on enhancing spatial experiences in the post-pandemic era and addressing social isolation among elderly residents in care facilities. The study employs qualitative research methods, including literature review, case studies, and expert in-depth interviews. The research begins with a comprehensive exploration of transition design's theoretical foundations, encompassing its core concepts, principles, and frameworks. Findings indicate that transition design's characteristics—systems thinking, long-term visioning, multi-stakeholder engagement, and interdisciplinary collaboration—provide distinct advantages in addressing complex social issues. These features facilitate comprehensive problem understanding and solution development, offering new methodological perspectives for social innovation research. Two case studies wereconducted to investigate the application of transition design. Case Study A focused on enhancing spatial experiences in the post-pandemic era, utilizing the PESTE (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental) analysis framework to comprehensively identify and understand COVID-19's impact on spatial experience and design. The research process involved workshops and semi-structured interviews with spatial design experts. Results revealed that while transition design effectively promotes multi-stakeholder participation and dialogue, its effectiveness as a research method significantly depends on the facilitator's understanding and guidance capabilities. Ineffective facilitation may result in superficial discussions or topic deviation. Case Study B addressed social isolation among elderly residents in care facilities, proposing a comprehensive solution framework encompassing policy-making, environmental design, and service innovation. During this process, transition design as a research method facilitated the development of a"Future Social" tool for exploring future visions, demonstrating its capacity to generate innovative tools for in-depth issue exploration. The study's primary contributions include expanding transition design theory application, enriching social innovation design methodologies, deepening understanding of design-driven system change, and proposing new paradigms for elderly care service design. Additionally, the research provides fresh perspectives on post-pandemic spatial design, innovative solutions for addressing social isolation in care facilities, new tools for social innovation practitioners, systematic thinking frameworks for policymakers, and exemplars for interdisciplinary collaboration.
