Abstract

Sleep constitutes an essential factor for physical and mental health in adults, with both sleep duration and sleep quality serving as key determinants of good-quality sleep. Factors influencing sleep quality include psychological, environmental, and behavioral components. Compared with psychological and behavioral factors, environmental factors such as bedding, pillows, and ambient temperature are relatively modifiable. This study focuses on the impact of smart-adjustable beds on adults' sleep quality. The aims of this study were: (1) to describe the current status of participants' demographic characteristics and satisfaction with smart-adjustable beds; (2) to evaluate changes in subjective sleep quality after using a smart-adjustable beds; and (3) to investigate the differences between participants' demographic characteristics and their satisfaction with smart-adjustable beds. This cross-sectional study employed convenience sampling via an online questionnaire targeting adults aged 18 years and older who had purchased a smart-adjustable bed. The structured questionnaire included measures of personal background, self-reported sleep quality, and satisfaction with smart-adjustable beds. A total of 245 valid responses were collected. The main findings were as follows: (1) The mean age of participants was 46.6 years; 58.0% were aged 40–59 years, approximately 60% were women, and most resided in southern and northern Taiwan. The three most satisfying features of smart-adjustable beds were cooling mattress materials, practical functionality, and ergonomic design. (2) A total of 68.8% of participants reported reduced difficulty initiating sleep after using a smart-adjustable bed, 60.0% reported improved sleep duration, and more than half reported improvement in specific sleep disturbances, including difficulty initiating sleep within 30 minutes and nocturnal awakenings. (3) Significant differences in satisfaction with smart-adjustable beds were observed by residential area and regular exercise habits, with those engaging in regular exercise reporting higher satisfaction. In conclusion, the findings of this study provide valuable implications for industry stakeholders into consumer satisfaction and its determinants following the use of smart-adjustable beds, as well as the potential benefits of such beds in enhancing sleep quality among adults. These results provide an evidence base for future sales strategies.
