Abstract
Human lifestyle has changed drastically under the outbreak of Covid-19 epidemic in 2019. Inspired by Up and Go Poles Walking School, I adopted pole walking in my family’s rehabilitation program during the outbreak and experienced how this exercise helped improve their health; and therefore decided to become a volunteer in the organization. I witnessed the strength of patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease (“PD”) when joining them in a trip around Taiwan in 2022, named “Scared of PD not, Walking Around the Island Together”. These experiences brought me to researching applications and meanings of this exercise. This study aims to understand the curriculum and events of Up and Go Poles Walking School, explore social support through participation of its activities, and provide a specific illustration of the 2022 trip. This narrative research is based on in depth interviews with 15 research participants, personal observation for nearly 2 years, as well as reading and organizing documents. Up and Go Poles Walking School not only elucidates what this exercise is about through it courses to public, but also focuses on open strategies and cross border collaboration. This model improves qualify of life for elders and shows a way for other organizations on how to solve health issue through innovation and co-working. Support and accompanying, strengths indispensable to a society, are created through deep understanding of specific needs and a combination of innovation and inclusion. Many elders isolate themselves due to health issues, but they get emotional and psychological support here, and thus regain their confidence and enthusiasm for life. Through diverse activities, elders support each other, which not only elevates their sense of belonging, but also strengthens the community. The 2022 round trip of Taiwan by PD patients aim to assist them and other people with disabilities to accomplish a challenge. This activity not only raises public awareness about this disease, but also helps patients face their lives with confidence.
