Abstract
This thesis explores the interplay between Thai and Taiwanese youth movements as reflected in the role of print media, particularly magazines, in shaping political discourse and fostering transnational solidarity. By examining the Thai Free Youth Movement (2020) and Taiwan's Sunflower Movement (2014), the study highlights the influence of democratic ideals, cultural exchanges, and media narratives in mobilizing youth activism. A discourse analysis of three prominent magazines—Matichon Weekly, A Day, and Sarakadee—reveals their role in amplifying political ideologies, cultural identity, and cross-border knowledge sharing. The research demonstrates how Taiwanese democratic strategies inspired Thai youth protests, particularly through symbols like the Milk Tea Alliance, which embodies regional solidarity against authoritarianism. Drawing on the concepts of ideology, hidden transcripts, and media-driven activism, the study underscores how print media bridges gaps between academic, activist, and public discourses. It evaluates how narratives of resistance against political oppression are constructed, disseminated, and transformed across both nations. This thesis employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating historical analysis and qualitative content evaluation to examine the contributions of magazines in fostering civic engagement and transnational social movements. It argues that despite their respective socio-political contexts, Thai and Taiwanese youth movements share common goals of challenging entrenched systems and advocating for democratic reforms. The findings highlight the transformative power of knowledge exchange, media influence, and cultural dialogue in shaping the future of Asian political activism.
